I’m So Afraid

The song “I’m So Afraid” was featured on Fleetwood Mac’s eleventh album which, was self titled and released in 1975. The song was written by the bands guitarist and co-lead vocalist who joined the band the same year in replacement of the bands former guitarist, known as Bob Welch. Lindsay Buckingham ended up writing this particular song prior to joining the band after catching a severe case of mono in the early 70’s with the fear of dying and was featured as the last track on the album. It has also been said that the song could’ve been about his relationship struggles with bandmate Stevie Nicks, as well as, about the loss of his father. “I’m So Afraid” was supposed to be featured on another Nicks/Buckingham album but, ended up being the B-Side to the song “Over My Head” which, of course is also featured on the bands eleventh album. It also ended up appearing on all the bands live albums since its release.

“I’m So Afraid” is absolute sheer perfection and shows off Buckingham’s guitar skills perfectly, which is why it’s been a hit since its 1975 release and has been featured at every live show they do. I discovered this one after watching their 1997 concert titled “The Dance.” I remember halfway into the song pausing it to go download it and read the lyrics to it. That song just had me in absolute awe as did Buckingham’s guitar playing, especially since I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Fleetwood Mac play live till I watched that particular show and felt inspired to write about it. Being that I’m one of those who has to know all about what I’m listening to, which makes blogging and writing about this kinda stuff the perfect hobby. In order to gain more inspiration for my writing, I’ve been watching more concerts I’ve been finding online, watching old interviews, googling the meaning behind the lyrics , which is really not much different then the stuff I do before blogging about any song. I decided to watch a few things on Fleetwood Mac that day and came across that particular show which, I’ll always be grateful for. I’ve been a fan of Buckingham’s for the last couple years thanks to the song “Trouble” which, is featured on his very first solo album released in 1981 and was titled “Law and Order.” That song is just the perfect ear worm. I don’t think Buckingham gets enough credit when it comes to his writing or his guitar playing.  He truly is quite an incredible musician both as a part of Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. The band Fleetwood Mac is what made me a fan of both his and Stevie Nicks. I just recently learned that Christine McVie who passed a way a couple years back also released quite a few things on her own so, I’ve been listening to her a lot lately as well. Fleetwood Mac is one of the greatest bands of the 70’s and is comprised of some of the most brilliant musicians of the 70’s. A few of which, who were born and bred right here in America, such as Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. While the rest of the band are from England.

I can definitely say that the song “I’m So Afraid” has become my all time Fleetwood Mac song since hearing it live just a mere few days ago. It’s one that once you hear it just once you’re inclined to listen to it over and over again. It truly is quite a beautiful song and is another one that holds so, much raw emotion and passion in it. You must feel what he must’ve been feeling upon writing it in the early 70’s, such as, his feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and fear. So many very real feelings so many of us can relate to. Usually the best songs are the ones we can feel. Like quite a bit from their twelfth album titled “Rumors”, which will be discussed in another post at another time along with more work by Fleetwood Mac. Both as solo artists and as a band.
